On Saturday, February 24, 2024, Ghana witnessed a day of collective mourning as people from diverse backgrounds gathered to pay homage to a revered figure, Apostle Dr. Michael Ntumy. He was a distinguished recipient of Ghana’s highest honor, the Order of the Volta.
As early as 5:00 am, Independence Avenue – Castle Road experienced heavy traffic as attendees flocked to the State House for a memorial service before Apostle Ntumy’s interment in Krachi, his hometown.
Despite the absence of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who was on an emergency visit, the event drew nearly every influential figure in Ghana. The Vice President, former President John Dramani Mahama, ministers, church leaders, members of the judiciary, politicians, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries formed a massive assembly.
Security measures were robust, with a significant police presence managing traffic and ensuring safety from the entrance of Castle Road to the State House. The memorial service commenced around 6:00 am, with attendees filing past the body of Apostle Dr. Michael Ntumy to pay their respects.
Elder Dr. Kwasi Mireku and the Voice of Pentecost led the congregation in choruses, creating a lively atmosphere. The emotional service included moments of raw display of grief as the bereaved family filed past the body.
Dignitaries, including former President John Dramani Mahama and the Chief of Staff, Hon. Frema Opare, paid their respects and exchanged pleasantries. President Akufo-Addo, represented by the Vice President, praised Apostle Ntumy’s dedication to the Church and nation.
Known as the “Darling Boy of The Church of Pentecost,” Apostle Dr. Ntumy was celebrated for his contributions, breaking barriers, and elevating the church nationally and globally. Tributes poured in from various organizations, acknowledging his vision, charisma, and dedication.
Madam Martha Ntumy, the widow, received commendations for her unwavering dedication and support during Apostle Ntumy’s 15 years of incapacitation. The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, delivered a sermon on “A Man Greatly Loved by God,” encouraging others to draw inspiration from Apostle Ntumy’s life.
Food vendors along the road witnessed a bustling business day, reflecting the economic impact of the event. The service concluded with members of the Executive Council carrying the casket, a gesture of deep honor for the ‘darling boy.’
In the words of President Akufo-Addo, Apostle Dr. Ntumy received a befitting farewell, recognizing his significant contributions to Ghana’s social and spiritual growth. Like Apostle Paul, he fought the good fight, finished his race, and kept the faith, earning the awaited crown of righteousness.
